A Little About Me

Well, with my birthday coming up, I think I am becoming more wiser? LOL So I thought since I shared this with a great online group, I might as well share it with you all as well, here is something about me:
My name is Rebecca and I run Columbia Gorge Coupon Mommy. I am 34, twice married, with a beautiful daughter who will be 10 this Fall. I live in a small (pop. 2,500) logging community nestled along the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge, named White Salmon, located in the Evergreen State, Washington. If you look on a map, you will see it about 1 1/2 hours East of Portland, Oregon. I grew up in this town (born and raised).

Home Coupon Organization:

Coupon organization:

Home Coupon Organization:

Before you begin.
Couponing does take some time. The amount of time it takes, though, can be minimized if you have the best organizing system. Sometimes creating the best system for you will take a bit of trial and error. Once you design and utilize a functional system, stick to it.
Find an area in your home that can be used for your couponing. You will need a lot of space to store a filing system, clip coupons and organize your shopping trips. A corner of your office, garage, basement or area that will provide amble space. You should find an area that is comfortable for you with as few distractions as possible. If you want to incorporate the whole family into the process an area in the family room would work well.
You will need to set up a system to keep all of your coupons organized. If you're already a thrifty couponer then you already have a good idea of what your needs are. If you're still not sure if couponing is right for you, you should start small with a recipe box so you can test the waters before you jump in with both feet.
When you find your recipe box is to small to handle the amounts of coupons you clip, then you will know it is time to move onto an expanding folder or portable binder.
Expanding folders or a file system can be used to store your clipped coupons. If you are computer savvy you could set up a file system on your computer that will keep track of your various coupons and locations. Your files and folders should be organized. Your style of organization will depend on how your search for specific coupons will fit your style. Do you want to file for brand types or general categories such as dairy, canned, meats, produce ect...? Think about the system you will find easy to navigate at a moment’s notice.
Now that you have a good idea what you will need to get your coupon area set up in your home, your a next tool is a nice 3 ring zippered binder to store your coupons for the grocery store trip. A 3 ring binder is portable and can be carried with you where ever you go. The bigger the binder the more coupons it will hold. You will want to make sure you are getting one that is well designed and durable so it will hold up during your organization process and the shopping trips. A 3 ring binder fits nicely in the shopping cart and when organized correctly can be easily navigated. You can buy a Case-It Velcro Closure Coupon Binder for under $20.00 I love the Case-It brand for its durability. You may also consider purchasing extra packets of the clear double sided coupon sleeve pages just so you never run out. You can purchase them at Amazon in 3, 6 or 9 pockets per page. Amazon also has the Coupon Binder Pages - Starter 20 Page Assortment + Bonus Sleeve for only $7.49. I really love this starter kit, because it gives you a great assortment of different sleeves to make organizing your coupons so much easier!
The binder itself should be organized clearly and efficiently. You don't want to be caught unable to find a specific coupon that you know you have 'somewhere' during the shopping process. You may want to consider purchasing tabbed dividers and coordinating them with color coded shopping lists to make navigation easy. The colored tabbed dividers will help you keep the coupons together in specialized sections.I recommend the  Loadedcouponbook.com . You can purchase the whole coupon binder system there. When you come upon a daily or in-store special that wasn't advertised you will be able to flip directly to the section and find a suitable coupon.
Your binder should also have room to carry a pen, calculator and notepad. If your binder doesn't include a zippered pocket to store these items you can purchase one online or at your local department store. If you have kids you will know how handy these can be.
Once you have a system in place the rest will fall in place. Remember, this is the time of trial and error and you can re-organize and perfect as you go.

Mt Dew + Coupons = Greatness!

Ok, so I chuckled at myself this afternoon as was clipping coupons.  I always have to have a Mt. Dew while clipping and organizing.  I never noticed that about myself until today.  I guess I was in my Zen! What helps your "zone" out while doing your coupons?

Happy Wednesday.  I went to Walmart and Walgreens.  Great deals out there today! I love making money on items that I can use towards my purchase.  Makes it more worth while!

$97.53 minus $40.28 in coupons. Total after $57.25. This is the best I have ever done at Walmart! 3 JMS shirts I paid $1 ea for. Made $ on the travel size stuff that is going with my camping stuff. Basically my total came from the few items I did not have coupons for like the $21 printer cartridge, some storage bins, 4th of July decorations, and the father's day t-shirt (my daughter thought grandpa would like it). Everything else ended up being free or paying for other things! Yahoo!!!
Walgreen's Haul: Before total $92.77, total savings: $70.45. Total OOP $22.32. 76% Savings!!!!

Surgery = No Time for Coupons

So my little sweetie pie, 7 year old daughter, went in on Thursday for double eye surgery for her Strabismus.  Being that the facility where the procedure needed to be done at was over an hour away, we had to pack up and leave town for a couple nights.

I did my homework, printed out coupons for local restraunts and even mapped their locations. I even got rolled eyes from my hubby when I did this, but hey, I was organized! I also got a huge envelope from my coupon train buddy earlier in the day so thought I would pack those along so that I would have something to do while my daughter was in surgery or while she was recovering.  This envelope was so HUGE that I knew it would take a while to sort it out as she had also sent expired coupons for me to send of to Coups for Troops (see ad on my page).

The night before surgery, we checked into our hotel.  Did not get anything done! Had to check out the hotel swimming pool and hot tub of course.  Then my daughter had to pig out as she couldn't have anything to eat after midnight and she has a new found tapeworm inside her belly that makes her think she needs to eat everything in site - so coupons in tow we hit the neighboring McDonald's and Safeway for some snacks.

Before Surgery

Day of surgery - Again, did not get any couponing done. I was a nervous wreck and cried as they wheeled her away.  After she left, the family made the decision that we should find something to eat so we just walked down to the hospital cafeteria.  I got razzed that I did not have a coupon to eat there.  By the time we got back up to my daughters room, we were not there more than 5 minutes when the doc walked in saying surgery went well and that she is in recovery.  So phone calls had to be made to out of town family while we wait for her to be wheeled back in.  Then once she was back in, I was the hovering mother and coupons were the last thing on my mind.

Mommy feeding the baby bird!
Later in the day, we were back at the hotel and in town relatives came in to see Aimee and were marvelled by the amount of food she was eating (and keeping down) so soon after surgery.  Before we all new it, it was bedtime and we were all crashed.

And now, as I sit 4 days later, my pile is still there, more organized than before but no where near where it should be.  Between medicine doses 4 times a day and her regular regiment of medicine for her ADHD and Panic Disorder I have begun to wonder if I will ever get caught up!  I do have my coupons sorted in envelopes by what is continuing on the coupon train, what is going to Coups for Troops and everything else is finally sorted in my binder.  All that is left is clipping the few inserts I picked up today.  I guess there is still hope to get it done by tomorrow so I can plan my shopping trip.  Just another day in the life of a mother with a special needs, yet finally straight eyed girl!
Beautiful Straight Eyed Girl!
I will tackle this mountain!

Many Ways to Save at Safeway

So today, I ventured out with my Sis in Law and my 9 mo old nephew to Safeway.  We have been trying to get together forever for a "girls day" and she is new to couponing and so we planned our trips and headed out.  An hour and an half later we were done.  She saved 55% off her bill and I saved 59% off mine.  I think we ROCKED the store.  No, it was not Extreme Couponing, but for small town mommies, anything above 50% is great (our stores don't double every coupon - only up to 4 coupons at 50 cents each - so only up to $2 per shopping trip).

I did manage to get quite a few FREE items on my trip and thanks to different ways to save, I was able to save more than half on my food bill.

1.  Store Card - Automatically gives sales prices to card members; a must have!

2.  E Coupons - Loaded coupons directly to my Store Card; I go to my store's website to do this and as some coupons via their site are better than others out there.  I also use www.shortcuts.com which is another way to load E Coupons to my store card. Unfortunately, and I am not the first one, to experience the E coupons coming off at time of transaction at the store.  Today, some of mine did not come off and I did not notice until already out in the car.

3.  Paper Coupons - Found in Sunday Newspapers, Magazines (my fave is All You), peelies (coupons found on packaging),  tear pads (coupons attached to shelving near products), Catalinas (those coupons that print out with your receipt at the store that you can use at a later time) & Company promos (get on a companies mailing list (like Tums or Cottonelle and they will send you high value coupons or even coupons to try a product for FREE) to name a few...

4.  In Store Sources - A.  Store flier that has In Store Coupons (that can be uses with the current sale and any coupons you have - called STACKING) B. Produce or Pharmacy Promos - my store has a display of Simple Nutrition  flyers and inside is a $1 off any purchase of $5 or more of produce.

So with all sources at hand, here is a break down of how the magic happened.

Walgreen Wednesday 5/25/11

So last time I mentioned that I wanted to challenge myself and see how much I can make my $5 RR stretch.  I think I did good, although, I didn't really stick to my plan (I hate to rush myself and this is what happens when I do).  Here is a look at what I did:

4 Axe Deotorants
1 Silk Shave Cream
1 Scunci Hair Access.

After coupons and my $5 RR I paid out of pocket $6.99.  In return I got $6.50 back in RR for next time. Not too shabby! :-)  I planned on saving those RR for my next week's trip.

Couponing 101

It is funny how I am getting approached by people I know and more importantly DON'T know while I am shopping.  Wallet,  cellphone in hand (aka my calculator) and my new binder of coupons (I got a nice zippered one for Mother's Day - thanks honey!), I pause and try to help fellow shoppers with their purchase, occasionally handing out a coupon or two.  The main question I get is "How do you save so much money? I used to do coupons but don't have the time."  My reply is that it actually does not take much time.  I added it up one time and I think I spend less than 5 hours a week "couponing". By couponing, I mean, finding coupons, clipping them, filing them and creating a shopping list.

Step 1 ~ Locate Coupons

There are several options out there.  My favorite source is the Sunday Paper.  There is usually over $100 in coupons each week put in the paper. Where the paper is $2.75 I find that a great deal as I know I can easily spend $2.75 in coupons per week.  How many papers should you get all depends on your needs.  Each week I get an email from Sunday Coupon Preview.  In that email, it tells me what coupons are going to be found in the upcoming Sunday paper. Sources of coupons inside are from Smart Source (SS), Red Plum (RP), Proctor and Gamble (PG) to name the most frequent ones. Sometimes I will buy 2 papers and sometimes 4 or more if there are some product coupons that are for items my family uses a lot of (chips, toilet paper, sports drinks, etc.).

Another great source is ALL YOU magazine sold only at Wal Mart.  This is a great magazine for right around $2 and comes out monthly.  Inside not only does it have innovative tips on cooking and decorating but there is always $50 - sometimes $120 in coupons per issue.  Pretty sweet huh?  I posted previously that I used $5 off coupon for JMS clothing that is sold only at Wal Mart when Wal Mart had a clearance sale on JMS and got 4 articles of clothing for absolutely FREE.  Great magazine, can't say that enough!

You can also find coupons on the internet.  Good sources are Coupons.com, Smartsource.com and Redplum.com. Also, if you are a Facebook junkie, a lot of companies have a Facebook page as well and if you "LIKE" their page, you will get first hand information on their promotions and they will allow you to print coupons from their page. And if you are brave enough, EBAY has coupons to be bid on.  I did this once and bid on a lot of 100 coupons for 99 cents including postage.  Surprisingly, they were decent coupons so I might do it again someday.  You just should be VERY vigilant and do your research on the buyer as to NOT buy counterfeit coupons, as that is against the law.  There are also internet clipping services available.  You pay someone to clip coupons for you for specific items.  You pay a "handling fee" and they send them to you.  Haven't approached that avenue yet but I have heard there are a few good services out there. Again, do you research and only go through reputable companies as counterfeit coupons are an issue in some cases.

A few other sources of coupons are PEELIES.  These are coupons that you PEEL off of a product.  There are also in some products coupons inside.  Products famous for this are cereal and first aid/medications.

In store coupon booklets.  These are coupon booklets usually located in the front of stores next to the sales ads or in the pharmacy sections.  These are usually IN STORE coupons that you can use WITH your paper coupons (known as STACKING).  Be sure to pick these up if you see them as they are quite valuable.

Finally, a new way that I am getting familiar with is a Coupon Train. This consists of a group of people sending coupons to each other.  Person 1 sends to Person 2. Person 2 to Person 3, Person 4 to 5 and so on and then the last person sends to Person 1 to create a full cycle.  The only cost to this is your time to go to the post office and the cost to mail the coupons.

Step 2 ~ Create Shopping List

In the new age wave of the internet, I have found that coupon match ups are posted on line 1 - 2 days before the sale breaks (or starts).  I keep a on going "shopping list" in my house that both my husband and daughter are getting good at writing down what needs to be shopped for as we are almost out of the item, or it is something they decide they want or are craving.

So with shopping list in front of me and coupon match up available. I start compiling my shopping trip.  Here is the thing to keep in mind.  If it is NOT on SALE and I DON'T have a coupon for it, it won't be bought!  So what I do is highlight what is on my house hold shopping list the item if it is on sale per the ad.  I will then pull any coupons that correlate to that purchase from both my coupon binder of paper coupons and any IN STORE coupons. I then estimate my OOP (out of pocket cost), as like many these days, we are on a tight food budget so every penny counts! :-)  With BIG LIST and coupons in hand I will head to the store.  One thing I will mention is that I don't always shop at one store.  We have a few grocery stores to choose from where I live and sometimes the stores will have different sales and/or prices.  An item may be on sale and cheaper with a coupon at store A than at store B.  So read your store ads wisely!  My preference is Safeway however, as in the store they have a rewards card program, you can load electronic coupons to your card via internet (and in most cases use them with your paper coupons), and in each weekly ad, there is a chance to double up to 50 cents per coupon; up to 4 coupons.  So for me it is a win win!

Step 3 ~ Shop Wisely

Sometimes, if you are like me, I get nervous when I am under pressure and their are a ton of people around.  I easily get flustered I should say!  So for me, the best time to shop is in the early morning, when I am fresh and energized, and there is typically less people out and about.  By early I mean around 9am or so.  Also at this time, since most stores stock their shelves over night, I have a fairly good chance of getting what I want / need when I head to the store.

In my binder, I keep a copy of the store ad.  Sometimes the order does not ring up right, so with ad in front of me, I can be vigilant of the sale price and have it available to show the cashier if needed.

Oh and did I mention, bring your coupons with you?  I have forgotten once or twice.  I have now gotten good with clipping an envelope of coupons to my shopping list so I don't forget.  Also, I bring my coupon binder with me.  Sometimes there is an unadvertised sale and with a coupon handy I could get a good deal.

Another tip, some stores give you a bag credit if you bring in your own grocery bags.  I have several that have already paid for themselves so now I make money with them. SCORE!

Step 3 rolls into Step 4 ~ Stockpile

A stockpile is, well in essence, an abundance of items or "stock" that will last a while.  If there is a good sale on cereal (to me if I can get cereal for less than $1 with sale and coupons) I will buy $10 worth or 10 boxes.  That will last a couple months in my house.  Or toothpaste, if it is on sale and with coupons and  is less than 50 cents or in most cases free, I will get several tubes.  I now have enough toothpaste, no kidding, to last my family several years and still be able to give some to charity around the holidays (my church give gift boxes to the needy and hygiene products are good to put in there).  So shop wise and stock up!  My goal is to not have to buy several things for a long time.  Right now, I wont need to buy like I said, toothpaste, but also I wont need laundry soap, shampoo, deodorant, and several different condiments for several months to a year or more (and yes I am aware of the shelf lives on the condiments so I only have what we will need and use - I am not one of those crazy shoppers where I need 50 mustards or 25 digestive aids).

This is just some of the basics to shopping with coupons.  There is so much more to say about it, but I have to save it for another day as the sun is shining and I have to get my daughter from school soon.  I promised to take her to the park and ice cream (and I even have a coupon for the ice cream - I'm telling you coupons are everywhere!
